Alejandro Valverde Crash Causes Patella Fracture – Bradley Gale

Valverde crashed on Stage 1 of the 2017 Tour de France, about half way through the stage. According to a statement released by his team, Movistar, “[He was] transferred by ambulance to the University Hospital in Düsseldorf, examinations confirmed two fractures to his left leg: one in his kneecap and another one in the talus bone. Valverde also suffered a deep wound to his tibia, without any muscle tissue affected by that cut.”

Valverde underwent surgery for the patella fracture but the talus did not require any intervention. He also sustained some fairly deep wounds to his lower leg and gluteal region that were repaired at the hospital.

He will certainly be out for the rest of the 2017 TDF, and it is likely that he will not return until the 2018 cycling season begins. His team will be missing him as they try to keep Nairo Quintana in contention for the Yellow Jersey.
